Award for Meritorious Achievement

This is CSE’s highest honor. It is awarded to an individual or an organization that has made significant contributions to advancing the broad goal of CSE: to improve scientific communication through the pursuit of high standards in all activities connected with editing.

C4DISC’s convener, Melanie Dolecheck, will accept the CSE Award for Meritorious Achievement on behalf of the organization. Melanie commented,

“As the convener and a founding member of C4DISC I am proud of how far C4DISC has come in a few short years and the work that we’ve accomplished so far. The response and support from the scholarly communications community has been inspiring to say the least. The passion that our community has for doing this work is reflected in the countless volunteer hours that have already been dedicated to developing community resources.

CFP — Implementing DEIA in scholarly publishing (ALPSP)

Initiatives designed to improve the diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in our society have become standard among many organizations in our industry. A special issue dedicated to this topic would address the tensions and challenges of establishing fair treatment of everyone involved in scholarly research and publishing. We are recalibrating policies and practices in human resources and workforce development, which has become a common topic on the conference circuit—online versions of which enable participation from more diverse attendees. This extends to our publishing programs, where open access has the potential to expand the ability for greater global participation. Platform providers and publishers are working together to develop more inclusive demographic data schemas and management practices, while conforming with data privacy regulations.

Schedule:

  • Submission deadline: 15 September 2022
  • Publication: January 2023

CFP — Special Issue On Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, And Accessibility In Policies And Practices In Scholarly Publishing

The Journal of Scholarly Publishing welcomes submissions for a special issue on diversity, equity, inclusivity and accessibility in policies and practices in scholarly publishing.

In both the political life of everyday experience and shifts in partisan politics and divergent perceptions of social justice, equity and respect for all persons, scholarly publishing is not immune from the impact of issues of diversity, equity and inclusivity in the production and dissemination of scholarly research in journals and books. Many publishers are focused on what the larger societal dynamics mean for academic publishing. At the same time, there is an increase in scholarship that positions diversity, equity, inclusivity and accessibility as opportunities to strengthen and expand scholarly publishing.

Triangle Scholarly Communication Institute

The first Toolkit for Equity, Toolkit for Organizations, was founded in The Triangle Scholarly Communication Institute. Please consider submitting a proposal for this event.

The Triangle Scholarly Communication Institute invites you to participate in SCI 2022, its seventh year in North Carolina’s Research Triangle region. This year’s theme will be Reckoning, Care, and Repair, and the program will take place from October 9 to 13, in Durham, North Carolina, USA. Sadly, we had to cancel SCI 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID pandemic, but we are hoping to be able to resume this October – see below and our pandemic FAQ page for information about COVID safety protocols and contingency planning.

TriangleSCI is not your typical academic conference – it’s four days of concentrated but relaxed time with a diverse cohort of individuals who have come to start new projects they have proposed, in teams they have built and with advice and contributions from participants on other teams and a set of interlocutors and experts who work across teams.

You set the agenda, and you define the deliverables – TriangleSCI provides the scaffolding for your team to develop its project. If your team’s proposal is selected, SCI will cover all the costs for team members to participate, including travel, meals, and accommodations, including for international participants. For more information about how TriangleSCI works, see the FAQ and links from previous years of SCI.

Passed our 100-member milestone for Adoptees of the Statement of Principles!

C4DISC is honored and excited to announce that we’ve passed our 100-member milestone! The Coalition was founded by 10 trade and professional associations across the publishing and scholarly communications industry. We set out to discuss and address the diversity and inclusion issues we face as a community.

When we came together, we had the data to show that there was a noticeable lack of gender equality and ethnic diversity inside of our workforce. We knew there was a problem but how could we contribute to fixing it? That’s where our members come in.

Our founding organizations band together to create a charter and action plan. Some of these included a joint statement of principles which focuses on a commitment to accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion. As of this post, more than 105 international organizations agreed to live by these principles to promote these practices within their own organizations. The impact we can have as a collective is far greater than one group can do on their own. Therefore, we are so thrilled to reach and surpass our 100-member mark. It signifies to our communities that we are working towards betterment. Progress is within reach, and it is because of our members that this is true.

So, we’d like to say thank you. Thank you for joining us in this critical effort, for the time you’ve volunteered, for the ideas you’ve raised, but most importantly for stepping up to do the right thing.

C4DISC Updates Statement of Principles

C4DISC UPDATES STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

October 25, 2021 — The Coalition for Diversity and Inclusion in Scholarly Communications (C4DISC), formed to discuss and address issues of diversity and inclusion within our industry, has updated their Joint Statement of Principles.

In principle and in practice, collectively, C4DISC member and partner organizations value and seek accessibility, diversity, and equitable and inclusive practices within the scholarly communications ecosystem. Our goal is to promote involvement, innovation, and expanded access to leadership opportunities that maximize engagement across identity groups and professional levels.

The work done to update the Joint Statement of Principles was truly a community effort. When the Joint Statement of Principles was originally drafted, the founding organizations acknowledged that it should be a living document and committed to reviewing and updating the statement every two years. The Steering Committee invited members, partners, and adopting organizations to propose changes to the Statement for the first time earlier this year.

“We received some really wonderful, quality feedback about how to improve the Statement,” said Melanie Dolechek, C4DISC Convenor. “It was really encouraging to see how engaged the community was in collaborating on this effort. The resulting changes have not altered the spirit of the Statement, but have made it even more inclusive and strengthened our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Kudos to our community for their contributions!”

All scholarly communications organizations are invited and encouraged to adopt the Joint Statement of Principles to show their support for making our community more diverse, equal, accessible, and inclusive. Opportunities to become a member, partner, or donor are also welcomed. There are currently more than100 organizations in support of C4DISC efforts and we hope you’ll join us if you have not already done so.

If your organization would like to adopt the Joint Statement of Principles, complete the Adoption Form.
